Sunday School

Wat Buddhanusorn Sunday Schoolwas founded in 1983, just three month after the temple was founded.  The main purpose of the school is to teach and promote Thai language, Thai arts and culture as well as Thai custom to Thai youth and those who are interested.  The teaching staff consists of local volunteers and seasonal teachers from one of the top university, Chulalongkorn University of Thailand.  Wat Buddhanusorn Sunday school consists of three departments:

  1. Thai Language Department
  2. Thai Classical Music Department
  3. Thai Classical Dance Department

Thai Language classes are held on Sundays during the school year between the months of September and June.  Classes are taught by local volunteers.  Thai language classes are divided into five levels ranging from Kindergarden through elementary.  Class materials emphasize Thai reading and writing. Thai Language classes for non-Thai speaking adults are divided into three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.  The beginner class emphasizes speaking Thai while the intermediate and advanced classes emphasize both Thai reading and writing. In addition to the normal school year, a Thai language summer program for youth, a joint program between Wat Buddhanusorn and the Department of Education, Chulalongkorn University, is also available.  Classes are taught by educated teachers who are specialized in those areas that described above.  Classes are held 5 days a week for 10 weeks for children ages 5 and up. Thai Classical Music and Thai Classical Dance classes are taught by teachers from Chulalongkorn University and local volunteers.  Classes are held on weekends during the normal school year.  Besides performing at Wat Buddhanusorn on specials events and Thai festivals, the Thai music and Dance group of Wat Buddhanusorn Sunday school students will be participated in cultural festivals in San Francisco and Bay Area communities and universities. The annual “Thai Classical Night” is among the most recognized event held by the Wat Buddhanusorn Sunday school. For questions, please contact the school directly at (510) 790-2294 or (510) 790-2296
