Thai Cultural Council of Fremont with the support of Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture, Thailand and the College of Dramatic Arts, Bangkok present a Thai Music Summer Workshop 2018 by two Thai music specialists, Mr. Songyos Kaewdee and Mr. Chairat Veerachai.

COURSE DETAILS

REGISTRATION FEE

  • $50 per one instrument
  • $30 fee for each additional instrument (in additional to the $50 flat fee)

COURSE LEANING OUTCOMES

  • Students will study elementary techniques on a Thai classical instrument of their choice, and will learn how to care for the instruments correctly.
  • Students will be introduced to basic rhythmic cycles, musical notation, singing techniques, and understand note reading.
  • Students will learn to perform several simple compositions.
  • Students will learn to play a Thai music instrument of their choice.

CLASS SESSIONS

Maximum Capacity: 7 students per class

  • Tuesday – Friday
    • 2-4 p.m.
    • 4-6 p.m.
  • Saturday (almost full)
    • 10 a.m.-12 p.m. (noon)
    • 2-5 p.m.

INSTRUMENT CHOICES

Student will learn how to master Traditional Thai classical instruments of their choice. There are classified into four categories, by the action used in playing:

  1. Plucking – Plucked String Instruments
    • Jakhe (จะเข้)
    • Phin (พิณ)
    • Sueng (ซึง)
  2. Bowing – Bowed String Instruments
    • Saw (ซอ)
    • Salo (สะล้อ)
    • Khim (ขิม)
  3. Striking – percussion Instruments and Hammered Dulcimer
    • Khong Wong (กลองวง)
    • Ranat Ek (ระนาดเอก)
    • Ranat Thum (ระนาดทุ้ม)
    • Pong Lang (โปงลาง)
    • Ungaloong (อังกะลุง)
    • Krap (กรับ) – clapper
    • Ching (ฉิ่ง) & Chap (ฉาบ) – cymbals
  4. Blowing – Wind Instruments
    • Khlui (ขลุ่ย)
    • Pi (ปี่)
